Disappearing Bees

In recent years there has been a significant decline in the British bee population. 25% of the United Kingdoms native bees are now listed in the Red Data Book of endangered species and three species of honeybee have already become extinct.

Bees play a vital role within our ecosystem with scientists estimating that 1/3 of our food supply is pollinated by bees. Bee's are in fact so vital to our ecosystem that Albert Einstein claimed that should bees become completely extinct, humans would only be able to survive on earth for four years after their disappearance.
With the help of the community via the 'keys for bees' scheme Bee Rewarded aims to set up bee hives in urban areas in order to help combat the declining bee population problem. Evidence shows that bees are fairing better in urban environments as they are away from problems they face in the countryside such as insecticides and pesticides being sprayed on both them and the crops they pollinate.
